Kathryn M. Welling

Kathryn M. Welling is the editor and publisher of Welling@Weeden, the influential independent journal of investment research and opinion that is written and distributed to Weeden clients. Kate established a reputation for hard-hitting investigative journalism and insightful, in-depth financial interviews during a 25-year career at Dow Jones & Co. Over most of that span, Kate served as a senior editor of Barron’s Business and Financial Weekly, which she joined in 1976.

Kate was appointed assistant to the editor of Barron’s in December 1981, at the same time that the magazine’s preeminent columnist, Alan Abelson, was named its editor. At the end of the next year, she was named managing editor and continued running Barron’s, in partnership with Abelson, until late 1991. Returning from an extended maternity leave the following year as associate editor, Kate focused her energies on interviewing, reporting and writing, churning out virtually all of the magazine’s published interviews, while backstopping Abelson on his Up And Down Street column, not infrequently writing it herself.

Kate received a B.S.J. from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism in 1974. She worked for the Oak Park Journal and The Toledo Blade while attending Northwestern and joined the AP-Dow Jones wire service in New York as a copyeditor upon graduation. She is a founding and active member of the Council of One Hundred, a service organization of distinguished Northwestern alumnae.
